A Mhondoro man has been arraigned before the courts accused of selling fake gold amalgam ore.
Tawanda Makoni, 28, of Mhondoro, appeared before magistrate Simon Kandiyero at the Harare Magistrates' Courts charged with fraud.
The State, through prosecutor Thomas Chanakira, alleges that on July 19, 2024, at around 0900 hours, Makoni and his two accomplices who are still at large made fake gold amalgam using battery cells.
It is alleged that Makoni masqueraded to the complainant as a genuine miner who mines at Kadoma and said to the complainant they were selling gold amalgam ore weighing 1332 grams.
The accused persons met the complainant at Nyabira Shops, and the complainant paid US$3 000 for the amalgam gold are.
It is alleged that the other two accomplices left with the money while Makoni accompanied the complainant to Harare to collect the outstanding balance of US$12 000.
Along the way, it is alleged that Makoni jumped from the complainant's car and started running away.
The complainant who was assisted by the public started chasing him and he was apprehended.
They went back to their car, checked the gold amalgam and discovered that the amalgam gold ore was fake.
The complainant escorted Makoni to ZRP Harare Central together with the fake gold amalgam ore where he filed his report.
He was ordered to appear in court on July 24, 2024.
