Zimbabwe launches youth service programme

A new chapter in youth development unfolded this week as the Zimbabwe government officially launched its Youth Service programme, with the first batch of 1000 young people embarking on training at Dadaya and Vumba centres. The initiative aims to cultivate a generation of patriotic, disciplined, and well-rounded citizens.

The programme, spearheaded by President Emmerson Mnangagwa, has garnered widespread support, including from traditional leaders. “We are excited to witness young people being trained to promote the development of the country,” said a representative of Chief Zimunya, Mr Leonard Chigodora.

The training curriculum, as outlined by Vumba Youth Service Centre Head Miss Monica Chekera, focuses on productivity, discipline, and national pride. Notably, the programme is open to youths of all educational backgrounds, with a particular emphasis on character building.

Youth Empowerment, Development and Vocational Training Minister, Honourable Tino Machakaire, visited the Vumba Training Centre this week, expressing optimism about the programme's potential to combat the pressing issue of drug and substance abuse among young people. “We have a serious problem with drugs, and this is the way to go,” he stated. The minister also assured trainees of priority employment opportunities within the government upon completion of the programme.

With an initial enrolment of 1000 youths, the government plans to expand the programme in the coming years, aiming to reach a larger number of young people. The initiative is seen as a significant step towards empowering Zimbabwe's youth and building a stronger nation.
