The Embassy of India in Zimbabwe has acknowledged the honour extended by Government in renaming Anson Road as "Mahatma Gandhi Road."

"Grateful to the Government of Zimbabwe for renaming Anson Road as 'Mahatma Gandhi Road' first ever Road in Zimbabwe named after an Indian leader,” said the Embassy on their X handle.

The naming of a road after Gandhi is part of Zimbabwe’s move from colonial names to those of international figures who have made significant contributions to humanity and have ideological resonance with Zimbabwe.

Mahatma Gandhi, also known as the "Father of India" or the "Great Soul," was an Indian political and spiritual leader who played a pivotal role in India's independence movement. He is widely revered as a symbol of non-violent resistance, civil rights, and self-rule.

Gandhi's philosophy of peaceful resistance, called "Satyagraha," inspired movements for civil rights and freedom across the world, including the American Civil Rights Movement led by Martin Luther King Jr. and the South African anti-apartheid movement led by Nelson Mandela.

Zimbabwe and India have a long standing friendship dating back to the days of the Mutapa Empire.

A number of Zimbabweans of Indian origin also played a role in the liberation struggle against colonial rule.
