A Zanu PF legislator, Tsungai Makumbe, has been accused of raping his ex-wife, impregnating her, and infecting her with HIV. Makumbe appeared before Magistrate Marewanazvo Gofa on Tuesday and was remanded out of custody. His trial is scheduled to begin on October 3.

The alleged rape incident took place in November 2023 and was reported to the authorities earlier this week. According to the prosecution, Makumbe visited his ex-wife's residence late at night and lured her outside under the pretense of discussing matters.

When she refused his advances, Makumbe allegedly pulled out a gun and forced her into his car, where he proceeded to rape her without protection. The prosecution alleges that he later offered her US$20 to purchase morning-after pills, which she declined.

The woman subsequently sought medical attention at Parirenyatwa Hospital, where she tested positive for HIV and discovered that she was pregnant.

The allegations against Makumbe have sent shockwaves through the community and raised serious concerns about the abuse of power by elected officials.
