Judgement day lset for 5 COH officials accused of land baron deals

Zim Now Writer

Five Harare City Council officials are facing allegations of fraud after allegedly converting a public open space into 52 stands that they sold to unsuspecting buyers without following due process. The trial for the accused, which began earlier this year, has concluded, with judgment set for August 16.

The accused, Matthew Marara, Aaron Tayerera, Tutsirai Kanojerera, Samuel Nyabezi, and Charles Sigauke, are alleged to have conspired to demarcate an open public space in Strathaven, Mabelreign, and illegally create two layout plans. The stands were then sold to unsuspecting buyers, with some paying significant sums of money for the fictitious properties.

The State, represented by Mr Anesu Chirenje, presented evidence from 16 witnesses, including the investigating officer. The prosecution alleged that the accused engaged in a series of fraudulent activities, including creating backdated documents, falsifying information, and deceiving potential buyers.

The accused allegedly claimed that the stands were given to them by the City of Harare as a salary offset initiative, misleading the buyers into believing that they were purchasing legitimate property. Several individuals fell victim to the scam, paying substantial amounts of money for the fictitious stands.
