A shocking revelation has emerged from the ongoing Commission of Inquiry into the operations of the Harare City Council. Over 200,000 home seekers have been unfairly disadvantaged due to rampant corruption and cronyism within the city government.
The commission has uncovered evidence that the Harare City Council has abandoned the established waiting list for land allocation, instead favoring land barons and relatives of council officials. This blatant disregard for fairness and transparency has left thousands of aspiring homeowners frustrated and disillusioned.
Blessing Muroiwa, chairperson of the housing, health, education, and licensing committee, admitted that the allocation of stands and houses has been "overtaken by events that must be corrected." He acknowledged the chaotic situation and the need for urgent reforms.
It has been reported that Harare City Council officials are colluding with land barons to parcel out stands, bypassing the established waiting list process. These land barons approach the council with their own lists of beneficiaries, who are then granted land directly, leaving those on the waiting list feeling marginalized.
The council's implementation of the regularisation of unoccupied land has also been exploited and allocated improperly. This process has not only prejudiced aspiring homeowners but has also resulted in significant financial losses for the city. Muroiwa admitted that the council may have lost millions of dollars due to these shady land deals.
