The 8th Annual UZ Handball Tournament is set to take place on October 19 and 20 at the University of Zimbabwe, promising an action-packed weekend of competitive handball. With 16 male teams and 12 female teams confirmed, the tournament is expected to showcase the best talent from across the country, including professional clubs, university teams, school teams, and handball academies.
Valentine Masaiti, the coordinator of the tournament and head coach of the UZ Wildcats, expressed enthusiasm for this year’s event. "As the biggest and longest-running handball tournament in Zimbabwe, we anticipate nothing short of fireworks. Every year, we see a higher level of play, and this year will be no exception."
This year’s tournament is particularly unpredictable in the men’s category, as no team has managed to win back-to-back titles. With fierce competition expected, fans and players alike are eager to see a new champion crowned. In the women's category, perennial champions Manyame Sparrows will face a significant challenge as they defend their title against the UZ Wildcats, who recently defeated them for the first time in a decade.
Shemaiah Bota, captain and assistant coach for the Manyame Falcons, shared his team's readiness: "We are much ready for the UZ tournament, and we are now doing some touch-ups so that we win the tournament." His confidence reflects the determination of many teams to give their best performances.
Simbarashe Tsombori, captain of the newly introduced Spartans HC, also expressed his team's ambition: "Our newly introduced team Spartans HC is ready to defeat big teams, and we are all geared up for the games." This eagerness adds an exciting dynamic to the tournament, with newcomers looking to make their mark.
The UZ Wildcats are gearing up for a competitive showdown, and other teams are expected to come well-prepared. Masaiti noted that "the excitement and preparation from all teams contribute to the tournament's dynamic atmosphere."
The University of Zimbabwe will be self-sponsoring the tournament, but organizers are optimistic about attracting additional partners as the event approaches. Prizes include trophies for the winning teams, medals for the top three finishers, and individual awards for outstanding performances.
With the tournament just around the corner, the anticipation is palpable. Handball enthusiasts are encouraged to come and support their teams, as this event promises to be a highlight on the sporting calendar
