A soldier employed by the Ministry of Defence has been sentenced in the Chinhoyi Magistrates' Court for failing to pay child maintenance.

The accused, 29-year-old Shephard Musaruwa, faced legal action after neglecting his financial obligations for his child.

According to the allegations, on August 21, 2024, the Chinhoyi Civil Court ordered Musaruwa to pay US$100 per month for the upkeep of his child.

However, he defaulted on the payments for both August and September 2024, resulting in arrears totaling US$200.

His failure to comply with the court's directive led to a police report being filed, which subsequently resulted in his arrest.

During court proceedings, Musaruwa was convicted and sentenced to three months in prison.

However, one month of the sentence was suspended, while the remaining two months were suspended on the condition that he clears the outstanding arrears of US$200.
