The ZIFA Normalisation Committee is adamant that the executive committee elections will proceed as scheduled on January 25, despite appeals from disqualified candidates at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) and the High Court of Zimbabwe.¹
Several candidates, including Walter Magaya and Temba Mliswa, have filed High Court applications, while former Warriors striker Benjani Mwaruwari and Gift Banda have taken their appeals to CAS. The disqualified candidates were struck off the election roster for failing to meet requirements, such as possessing five O Levels or equivalent.
ZIFA has expressed reservations about Magaya's High Court application, stating that it goes against ZIFA statutes. In contrast, the association has praised Mwaruwari for following the proper channels by appealing to CAS.
The elections are likely to go ahead as planned, with ZIFA committed to conducting a free, transparent, and orderly process. However, the outcome of the appeals may impact the legitimacy of the electoral process.²
The presidential candidates who made the cut include Martin Kweza, Twine Phiri, Marshall Gore, Philemon Machana, Makwinji Soma Phiri, and Nqobile Magwizi. Meanwhile, 38 candidates are vying for six ordinary board member posts.
