The Harare Municipal Police today arrested a street vendor at the busy intersection of Rezende and Robert Mugabe streets for selling fake and repackaged groceries, many of which were expired.

In a statement, the City of Harare identified the vendor as Bornwell Dirwai, who was caught distributing repackaged products such as milk in South African-branded containers, margarine in Buttercup margarine containers, and cooking oil in Zimgold packaging.

Authorities are raising awareness about the health risks associated with counterfeit goods and are advising residents to remain vigilant.

“Residents are urged to exercise extreme caution when purchasing goods. They should only buy from reputable shops to avoid health complications caused by fake products that have flooded the market,” said the City of Harare in the statement.

The incident highlights ongoing challenges with counterfeit goods in Harare, raising questions about consumer safety and the need for stricter enforcement of food regulations.
