The Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission has apprehended four Zimbabwe Revenue Authority officials on allegations of soliciting a US$6,000 bribe from a transport operator.
The officials—Jonathan Maguta, Obert Mitwira, Simon Homera, and Laul Gwatirinda—were arrested after accepting over US$1,000 while on duty. Upon searching their vehicle, ZACC officers discovered an additional US$3,951, believed to be part of the extorted funds.
This incident occurred during an operation aimed at curbing smuggling, where the officials had impounded a bus belonging to Best Express Logistics. After the company paid the required excess duty of ZWL$5 000, the officials reportedly demanded the bribe to release the bus.
Beatrice Maramwidze, a director at Best Express Logistics, reported the matter to ZACC, prompting the investigation that led to the arrests.
The suspects are currently held at Avondale Police Station and are expected to appear in court on Saturday, facing charges of extortion or, alternatively, criminal abuse of duty as public officers.
