A draft motion proposing constitutional amendments to extend presidential, parliamentary, and local authority term limits in Zimbabwe has appeared on social media platforms.
The motion, led by Hon. Dr. Energy Mutodi, suggests extending the presidential term by up to five years, allowing Parliament to decide on additional terms beyond the current two-term limit, and removing restrictions on elected officials’ term extensions.
incumbent Presiden Emmerson Mnangagwa will be 90 years old in 2033 when the proposed extension expires.
In response to draft, Hon. Dr. Energy Mutodi issued a statement confirming the authenticity of the document but emphasized that it remains a draft under discussion.
He stated, “Until signed by its proponents and approved by the Honourable Speaker of Parliament Advocate JF N Mudenda, it remains a draft and work in progress.” Dr. Mutodi assured that due process would be followed in accordance with the Constitution and parliamentary rules.
Mutodi has an intricate history wish Mnangagwa dating back to the pre 2017 coup period.
Mutodi served as a deputy Information Minister before Mnangagwa fired him for unspecified reason.
