A tragic lightning strike at Chimurenga Mine in Vanguard, Mberengwa, has left three dead and five others injured.
The incident occurred last Wednesday when eight miners sought shelter in a wooden cabin as rain began to fall. The lightning struck the cabin, killing three miners instantly and injuring five others.
The deceased have been identified as Simbarashe Chimombe ,23, Clemence Mucheri ,36, from Buhera, and Pardon Ncube ,23, from Zvishavane. The survivors were quickly rescued and taken to Mberengwa District Hospital, where they are reported to be in stable condition.
Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko, a spokesperson for the Zimbabwe Republic Police in Midlands Province, confirmed the incident and issued a public warning.
He urged the public to avoid using electronic devices such as cellphones and landlines during thunderstorms, as they can attract lightning.
