Dealer seizes 4 cars from couple after they sell him fake gold

A Kwekwe man arraigned in court for extorting property worth more than US$ 57 000 has been remanded out of custody to 26 January 2022.

Donald Chiwenga (45) was summoned to the Harare Magistrates' Court charged with extortion contravening Section 134(1)(a) of the Criminal Law Codification and Reform Act, Chapter 9:23.

The court was informed that Chiwenga bought 480 grams of gold valued at US$24 000 from Eric Marangarire and his wife Mercy Maphosa in Chinhoyi.

Chiwenga later realised the gold was fake when he took it for smelting in Kwekwe.

Chiwenga in a bid to recover his money, took the couple hostage and seized their cars, a Mercedes Benz, Honda Fit in Harare.

The he also went to Mberengwa and seized a Toyota Corolla and a Toyota Hilux.

He forced Marangarire and Maphosa to sign agreements of sale of the cars in the presence of his lawyer.

The value of the vehicles was set at US$57 500 and cars worth US$50 000 were recovered.

Magistrate Dennis Mangosi who presided over the case remanded Chiwenga out of custody on free bail. The case continues on 26 January 2022.
