Zimbabwe has launched a new national energy plan that aims to expand access to electricity and clean cooking solutions by 2030.
The Energy Compact, presented by Energy and Power Development Minister July Moyo, was recently approved by Cabinet. It forms part of Mission 300, a regional energy initiative adopted during the Africa Heads of State Energy Summit in January 2025.
“This Compact gives us a clear plan to make sure every home can access affordable and reliable electricity,” said Moyo.
Under the plan, 3.1 million households are expected to be connected to electricity, while 70% of the population will gain access to clean cooking methods by the end of the decade. The government hopes the plan will address long-standing challenges such as outdated infrastructure, electricity shortages, and lack of access in rural communities.
The Compact prioritises building more power stations, boosting regional cooperation, scaling up renewable energy, and opening up the sector to private investors. Strengthening the financial stability of state power utilities is also a key focus.
Moyo said the initiative would also help Zimbabwe adapt to climate-related risks and create a more attractive environment for businesses, particularly those developing off-grid energy solutions in remote areas.
