The Zimbabwe School of Mines has issued a security alert warning staff and students to exercise extreme caution in the Killarney area of Bulawayo, following a surge in illegal gold panning activity and related crime.

According to a press statement from ZSM, gold panners have occupied the Bulawayo City Council Pit near Cecil robots and New Parklands, creating a hazardous environment for both motorists and pedestrians.

“These panners are posing a threat to passersby... Cases of robberies and assaults have been recorded by police,” the statement read.

ZSM advised its community to limit movement in the area, avoid picking up passengers, and keep car doors locked and windows shut. Students and staff were also cautioned against carrying large sums of money or valuables, and discouraged from using private transport in the vicinity.

Instead, the institution urged the use of registered public transport and encouraged individuals to report suspicious activity to the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) Khumalo, the Killarney Neighborhood Watch, or ZSM Security.

“We are urging all our staff and learners to stay safe and alert. If anything happens, please report it immediately,” said the ZSM Security Department.
