The State has officially dropped fraud charges against business partners Moses Mpofu and Mike Chimombe, who were accused of defrauding the Harare City Council of US$260 000 in a controversial streetlight contract deal.
The case, which had garnered significant public attention, was linked to an advance payment allegedly made under a disputed US$9 million contract for streetlight installations. Authorities had previously claimed the deal was fraught with irregularities.
The trial, initially set to begin on Tuesday, was postponed after prosecutor Wisper Mabhaudi informed the court that further consultations were still underway.
When proceedings resumed today, the State announced its decision to withdraw the charges before Mpofu and Chimombe could enter their pleas.
Presiding over the matter, High Court Judge Justice Benjamin Chikowero confirmed to the accused that the prosecution would no longer be pursuing the case.
