What began as a simple pastime during the stillness of the COVID-19 lockdowns has blossomed into a vibrant business for Harare-based crochet artist, Primrose Chengetayi Mupunganyi-Mazongonda. With every stitch, she brings warmth, joy, and creativity to life through her handmade brand, Ngee Crafts.
Her story is one of discovery, passion, and perseverance.
“I didn’t even know I could crochet,” Primrose admits with a laugh. “It all started as a relaxing hobby—something to do while we were stuck at home. I watched online tutorials and just kept practicing. Before long, I was making pieces for friends and family.”
Encouraged by those closest to her, Primrose took a leap of faith and turned her newfound talent into a business. Today, her products—ranging from cozy ponchos and stylish hats to skirts, bikini sets, scarves, and soft house booties—are in high demand. Each item is made by hand, with care and purpose.
The name Ngee Crafts holds special meaning for her. Derived from her middle name, Chengetayi, “Ngee” was a childhood nickname affectionately given by her father. “It felt personal, simple, and unique. I wanted a brand name that meant something to me and was easy for customers to remember,” she explains.
While the journey has been fulfilling, it hasn’t been without its challenges. “One of the biggest issues I face is last-minute cancellations—especially with custom orders where I’ve already used time and materials. It’s frustrating, but I’m learning to navigate it with grace.”
Primrose is not only a creator but also a student. She’s studying for a Diploma in Marketing with the Institute of Administration and Commerce (IAC)—a decision she says has helped her handle competition and customer relations more effectively.
“I believe in standing out through my designs and personal touch. Competition keeps us sharp, and I’m using what I learn academically to build my brand.”
Beyond selling her work, Primrose is passionate about teaching. She offers crochet lessons to beginners, both privately and in schools. “Teaching others helps keep the craft alive. It also pushes me to improve,” she says.
At the heart of it all is a deep sense of purpose. “My driving force is the joy I feel from making something with my own hands—and seeing that creation make someone else smile. It’s priceless.”
With a growing list of repeat customers and referrals, Primrose’s work speaks for itself. “It’s rewarding to know people love what I make. Their support motivates me every single day.”
Even in her spare time, Primrose is immersed in her craft. “Crocheting was once my hobby, so I don’t really switch off. I’m constantly exploring new patterns or scrolling through Pinterest for inspiration. I love staying in touch with global trends and bringing that energy into my work.”
Her advice to fellow entrepreneurs? “Let your passion guide you. Listen to your customers, adapt, and always strive to improve.”
