Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services, Nick Mangwana, has called on the media to play a central role in unifying the Southern African region by bridging cultures and promoting sustainable development.
Speaking at the official opening of the 30th Regional Adjudication Committee (RAC) Meeting for the 2025 SADC Media Awards Competition in Harare, Mangwana said journalism must evolve beyond news reporting to become a tool for regional cohesion and progress.
“Journalism is not just about reporting the news, it’s about telling the stories that define us, connect us, and drive development,” said Mangwana.
“Let’s use our words and images to bridge cultures, inspire change, and promote sustainable growth.”
Mangwana urged journalists to innovate and adapt in response to modern challenges, particularly the rise of misinformation and the impact of disruptive technologies like artificial intelligence.
“In an era of fake news and digital disruption, the media must remain a beacon of truth and accountability,” he said.
“These awards are more relevant than ever as they reaffirm our values of fairness, independence, and regional cohesion.”
He applauded the RAC for maintaining transparency and integrity throughout the adjudication process and expressed appreciation to journalists across the region for their commitment to telling development focused stories.
Winners of the 2025 SADC Media Awards will be announced at the 45th SADC Summit of Heads of State and Government, which is scheduled to be held in Madagascar later this year.
SADC Secretariat representative Barbara Lopi also addressed delegates during the official opening, commending the media for its contribution to advancing regional integration and development.
“The process is more than just awarding prizes; it is about recognising excellence and commitment to the region’s growth,” said Lopi.
She thanked Zimbabwe for hosting the RAC session and praised its continued role in communicating SADC’s vision effectively.
“This platform enables us to celebrate journalism that fosters cohesion, trade, and development. The media remains a critical partner in our mission to build a united and prosperous SADC,” she said.
Lopi acknowledged the dedication of the journalists who submitted entries and extended appreciation to SADC member states for supporting the Media Awards initiative.
She reaffirmed the Secretariat’s commitment to deepening cooperation with the media through such platforms.
The RAC meeting marks the beginning of the final stage in adjudicating entries for the 2025 SADC Media Awards, which recognise excellence in print, photo, television, and radio journalism across the region.
