Ramaphosa appoints Gwede Mantashe as acting Police Minister

South African president Cyril Ramaphosa has appointed Gwede Mantashe, the current Minister of Mineral and Petroleum Resources, as Acting Minister of Police, effective immediately until law professor Firoz Cachalia takes over in early August.


Senzo Mchunu, who was appointed police minister in July 2024, was placed on immediate “special leave” on 13 July 2025 following explosive allegations by KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi. Mkhwanazi accused him of colluding with organized crime, disbanding a police task force investigating political assassinations, and obstructing key investigations.

Mchunu denies the accusations, calling them baseless. In response, Ramaphosa announced a judicial commission of inquiry led by a judge to examine these claims
