A Grade Six pupil at Seventh Day Lowveld Adventist Primary School in Chiredzi committed suicide after his mother had asked him to take back two clay pots he had picked up from a Madzibaba shrine.

Frank Muvavarirwa, 12, of Makondo Extension hung himself with a canvas belt in a bushy area near his parents’ house at around 9am last Tuesday after his mother, Rangarirai Chamisa, had ordered him to return the clay pots he had brought home.

Masvingo Police spokesperson Inspector Kudakwashe Dhewa, in confirming the incident said they are yet to determine the cause of the suicide, adding that people must value life and not resolve to suicide when they face challenges.

“Frank came home carrying two pots at around 9am and his mother instructed him to take them back because she suspected that they belong to a Madzibaba who could cast a curse on him.

“He left home with the pots and did not return. His mother went looking for him only to find him hanging from a tree in a nearby bush,” said a source.

Clay pots are traditionally used by Madzibaba prophets at their shrine and are used to put “holy water” they use during their prayers and healing sessions.
