Six men who were moving around assaulting and robbing people of their property have been brought to court.
They are Simon Katize also known as Madzibaba, 30, Aldrin Nyadzayo, 37, Edgar Chiwashira, 38, Steven Penzura, 28, Jacob Gwanyangwanya, 42, and Prince Nyamhanza ,39.
They recently appeared before the Harare Magistrates’ Courts facing four counts of robbery and for contravening the Firearms Act as they committed the crimes using a stolen gun. All six of them are from Epworth.
The court heard from the prosecution that on November 22, 2022, at around 0200 hours the accused armed themselves with matchetes, iron bars and catapults and confronted the first complainant, Gamuchiral Mapiye.
Mapiye was manning a gas company called Velvet which is situated at number 325 Hallow Road, Masasa, Harare.
They dragged Mapiye from a lorry which was parked in the yard and in which he was resting and he fell down. The six then started assaulting him all over his body demanding cash which was in the cash office.
They later searched him and took his service pistol, a Norincho, loaded it with a magazine of four live rounds. Thereafter, they handcuffed the guard using his handcuffs and tied his legs using shoe laces, after which they carried him to the cash office. They forced the door open by breaking it.
While in that office, they stole an empty Byco safe, grey in colour, assuming that there was money inside.
The six later proceeded to a Datro Toyota lorry which was parked in the yard and stole 2x12 volts Exide batteries.
Katize, Nyadzayo, Chiwashira, Penzura, Gwanyangwanya and Nyamhanza took a wheelbarrow that was in the yard and used it to carry the safe but later dumped it at a nearby river after they discovered it was empty.
On December 23, 2022 detectives from homicide received information that led to the arrest of the accused persons.
This led to the recovery of a Norinco pistol with serial number 147372 and a magazine of 3 rounds and an Exide car battery which they had stolen.
The total value of stolen items was US$1 460 and only US$ 850 was recovered.
It has since been established that during their reign of terror and using the stolen Norinco pistol, they robbed Simon Madamombe in Rockview, Epworth of items worth US$9 000 of which US$5 000 has been recovered.
The third suspect who fell prey to their robbery spree is Noble Maruza of Avonlea who lost US$ 2 190 cash, 13 pairs of male shoes, five blazer jackets, groceries, an M32 Samsung Cell phone, Samsung 510, Lenovo Think pad, Hp Laptop, 3kg gas tank and two Mornach bags.
They moved to the next room where they confronted the fourth complainant, Asani John, and threatened to kill him if he did not surrender money to them. They robbed him of US$700 cash, suits, shoes, TV set and Honda Fit keys.
Detectives recovered the Norinco pistol used in the robberies at one of the suspects, Chiwashira’s residence
Magistrate Dennis Mangosi who presided over the matter remanded the six to January 3, 2023, and advised them to apply to the high court for bail consideration.
