A couple who worked for a Matabeleland North farmer Dr Geneva Sibanda were arrested in Bulawayo for the gruesome murder of their employer last Tuesday.
Baron Chiguru, 28, from Shurugwi and Sheila Ndlovu from Nyamandlovu went on to loot the farmer’s property, including a shotgun and pistol, which they loaded into his car before driving to Bulawayo where they hid at a friend’s house in the city.
Chiguru worked as a herdboy while Ndlovu was a maid at the farm located at Robert block, Queens area in Bubi District along the Bulawayo-Nkayi highway.
According to Matabeleland North provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Glory Banda the couple were only sold out after their friend suspected that something was wrong after he spotted the shotgun and pistol in the car.
“On the day in question, the now deceased, Dr Geneva Sibanda told his workers that he suspected that they were people doing tree poaching within his farm and requested the two to accompany him to investigate the matter. It is while out investigating these possible tree poachers that one of the workers struck him twice with an axe on the head, they then used Dr Sibanda’s vehicle to drag his body to a disused mine where they dumped it,” said Insp Banda.
Insp Banda said the motive behind the murder was not yet clear although they suspected it was driven by the desire for self-enrichment.
“As police we call on members to value the sanctity of life and avoid situations that will see them committing such gruesome killings,” said Insp Banda.
The process to retrieve Sibanda’s body revealed that the suspects had buried Sibanda under sand before throwing a tyre, cow hides and a mosquito net on top.
The suspects narrated the gruesome murder during indications to CID homicide detectives.
