A Borrowdale man, George Hungwe on Monday appeared before Harare magistrate Dennis Mangosi facing murder charges after he allegedly killed a fellow imbiber over alcohol.

Hungwe, 37, was arrested on January 18.

Mangosi remanded him in custody to February 6 and advised him to apply for bail at the High Court because of the seriousness of his crime.

The court heard that on December 31, last year at around 1630 hours, the now deceased was at Sally Mugabe Heights shops at a shebeen known as “paWelly”, which is owned by one Wellington Muzora.

The now-deceased bought whisky and he immediately went away, taking another bottle of whisky that belonged to one of the patrons.

Prosper Pawakarambwa, Batanai Vande and Wonder Nhemachena, who were also at the shebeen, made a follow-up and found him at him home, drinking the whisky.

They brought him back to the shebeen and accused him of stealing the bottle of whisky.

An altercation arose between the now deceased and Hungwe, who owns a pool table located at the same shebeen. Hungwe assaulted the now deceased and he fell on the ground.

Hungwe was seen on the same date at about 1900 hours, in the company of other unidentified patrons, escorting the now deceased from the shopping centre.

Around 6am on the following day, the body of the now deceased was found naked, hanging on the window with the lower part of the body inside the room while the upper part was hanging outside.

The body had a deep cut on the left thigh and also on the foot.

A knife was recovered close to the body and subsequent investigations led to Hungwe’s arrest.
