A 32-year-old police officer has been sentenced to 30 months in prison for extorting US$50 from a motorist.
Sergeant Paul Mutingoringo Dzimbanhete, stationed at Karoi Urban Police Station, unlawfully confiscated Olly Mcupi’s driver’s certificate of competency at a roadblock along the Karoi–Nyamambizi Road between June 3 and 13, 2025, and demanded US$50 for its release.
Following a complaint by Mcupi’s father, an internal investigations team from the Police General Headquarters set up a sting operation.

Mcupi arranged to meet Dzimbanhete at TM Supermarket in Karoi, where the officer returned the certificate in exchange for cash.
As the transaction took place, the internal investigations team moved in, capturing the moment on video.
In a desperate attempt to destroy the evidence, Dzimbanhete swallowed the marked US$50 note.
Investigators recovered US$3, ZiG10, and a police notebook from him, which contained a false entry for “dangerous parking.”
The court found Dzimbanhete guilty of extortion and sentenced him to 36 months’ imprisonment, with six months suspended for five years on condition of good behavior.
