Zimbabwe has recorded a sharp increase in veld fires, with three people losing their lives and property worth about US$1.5 million destroyed within a single week, according to Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Minister, Dr Jenfan Muswere.
Addressing journalists after Tuesday’s Cabinet meeting, Muswere said that between 4 and 10 October 2025, a total of 211 fire incidents were reported nationwide. The blazes ravaged 76,940 hectares of land, a significant rise from the 49,745 hectares destroyed during the same period last year.
“The increase in fire outbreaks was mainly due to the windy conditions experienced during the week under review,” said Muswere.
“To date, three lives have been lost, and property valued at over US$1.45 million—including agricultural equipment, tourism facilities, and household assets—has been destroyed.”

Mashonaland West was the hardest-hit province, accounting for 46% of all recorded fires, followed by Mashonaland East (15%) and Mashonaland Central (14.7%).
Muswere urged farmers and rural communities to take extra precautions during this fire restriction period.
He emphasised the importance of establishing fireguards, maintaining fire-fighting equipment, and training teams capable of responding swiftly to outbreaks.
“Farmers are further encouraged to use proper land preparation methods instead of fire,” Muswere warned. “Government will not hesitate to impose penalties on those who violate fire control regulations.”
