This weekend, the gentle hum of guitars, mbira rhythms, and soulful harmonies will drift through Milton Park as one of Zimbabwe’s most enduring voices, Victor Kunonga, celebrates his birthday in style. The occasion — titled “A Celebration of Art” — is part of the Afrotranc3 Series, presented in collaboration with the Zimbabwe German Society, and promises to be a sensory feast of sound, movement, and heritage.
Set for Saturday, October 25, at 5:30 PM, the event will bring together a line-up as thoughtful as Kunonga himself: Victor Kunonga & Peace, Kurai Makore, the Hwamanda Dance Troupe, and other guest artists.
The venue — Zimbabwe German Society, 51 Lawson Avenue, Milton Park — has long been a creative home for many of Zimbabwe’s finest musicians, poets, and dancers, making it the perfect backdrop for this cultural gathering.
Advance tickets are going for US$10 and can be delivered- a modest price for an evening steeped in artistry and soul. Gate entry will be US$20
Victor Kunonga: The Gentleman of Afro Jazz
For over two decades, Victor Kunonga has stood as one of the few Zimbabwean musicians who have blended poetry, social consciousness, and timeless melodies without bending to commercial trends.
His debut album, “Such Is Life” (2004), immediately set him apart — a silky-voiced storyteller who carried the spirit of Oliver Mtukudzi yet carved his own lane through elegant, jazz-inflected Afro-fusion.

Kunonga’s music often feels like a quiet rebellion — deliberate, unhurried, and deeply rooted in Zimbabwean experience. Songs like “Tenda”, “Handinete”, and “Kunzwana” explore love, resilience, and the politics of daily survival, all wrapped in lush instrumentation. His band, Peace, complements him with a soundscape that’s earthy yet urbane — mbira tones blending with bass grooves and jazz guitar.
Offstage, Kunonga is known for his humility and passion for nurturing young talent. He has performed across Africa and Europe, consistently using his platform to celebrate cultural identity and advocate for social harmony.
Saturday’s event, aptly themed “A Celebration of Art”, goes beyond music — it’s an invitation to reconnect with Zimbabwe’s creative pulse. The inclusion of dance troupes and visual art underscores a shared philosophy: that art, in all its forms, is not just entertainment but a vessel of memory, resistance, and hope.
For Kunonga, it’s also a moment of reflection — marking another year in a career that continues to inspire both listeners and fellow artists. In a time of fleeting fame, Victor Kunonga remains timeless — a true custodian of Zimbabwe’s Afro-jazz soul.
