
Two children have died and 14 others, including seven adults and four children, are critically ill following a suspected case of food poisoning at a traditional beer ceremony in Mashava, Masvingo, on 27 October 2025.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirmed that the victims fell ill after consuming sadza and mahewu during the ceremony.

“The Zimbabwe Republic Police is investigating a sad incident where two children died while 14 others, who include seven adults and four children, are critically ill after attending a traditional beer ceremony in Mashava area, Masvingo,” said Police Spokesperson Commissioner P. Nyathi.
According to police, the victims suddenly developed severe stomach pains after eating and drinking at the event. The two minors, aged three and seven, reportedly died shortly after.
Four children and seven adults are receiving treatment in critical condition at Masvingo General Hospital, while three others are being attended to at Mashava Clinic.
Commissioner Nyathi added that investigations are ongoing and that “more details will be released in due course.”
