A 47-year-old man from from Mazibeka 1 village under Chief Malisa in Silobela died upon admission to Silobela District Hospital after being assaulted with a log for trying to stop a fight between a couple on Christmas day.
Midlands provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko confirmed the incident saying police had since arrested Blessing Maphosa of the same village for allegedly striking Mandla Moyo with a log on the head several times, accusing him of having an affair with his wife.
“Maphosa and his wife Praise Nyoni, 36, from Mazibeka village were on separation and Praise was staying with her parents. On Sunday around 5pm Maphosa visited his wife with the intention to settle their difference,” said Insp Mahoko.
Insp Mahoko said that while they were talking, Maphosa became violent, resulting in Praise seeking refuge at her neighbour Sisa Ndlovu’s homestead.
Sisa reportedly tried to counsel them but failed until she eventually called in neighbours to assist.
That was the point at which Moyo also appeared, trying to assist in settling the couple’s differences but Maphosa assaulted him, accusing him of having an affair with his wife.
“Maphosa took a log from a fence and struck Moyo several times on the head and Moyo fell to the ground and bled profusely until he became unconscious,” said Insp Mahoko.
Moyo sustained several wounds on the head following the attack and was rushed to Silobela District Hospital and he died upon admission.
Insp Mahoko appealed to members of the public to shun violence and prioritise dialogue in solving disputes.
