Kwekwe Driver Jailed 10 Months for Crash That Killed Four

A 46-year-old man, Percy Mkwaturi, has been sentenced to 10 months in prison after he was convicted of culpable homicide for a road traffic accident that claimed four lives in August this year.

Mkwaturi appeared before the Kwekwe Magistrates’ Court.

The court heard that on August 30, 2025, at around 6:57 pm, Mkwaturi was driving a Subaru towing a trailer with 14 passengers along the Kwekwe–Gokwe Road.

While attempting to avoid a stationary vehicle ahead, he veered into the opposite lane and collided head-on with an oncoming Toyota Probox.

The crash, which occurred at the 65-kilometre peg, resulted in the tragic loss of four lives.

The State proved that Mkwaturi had been grossly negligent in his driving. The court cited several particulars of negligence, including failure to keep a proper lookout, failure to maintain control of the vehicle, travelling at an excessive speed under the circumstances, and failing to take reasonable action when a collision became imminent.

The magistrate said the sentence reflected the seriousness of reckless driving, particularly when it endangers multiple lives.
