Man Faces Attempted Murder Charge for Allegedly Running Down Fraud Accuser

Obvious Paureni, 26, of Ruwa, appeared before the Harare Magistrates’ Court facing attempted murder charges following a dramatic daylight incident along Market Street, Eastlea, on October 16, 2025.

According to prosecutors, the complainant, Richard Kanhema, 35, was driving in the area around 2:30pm when he noticed a vehicle parked by the roadside, one he believed belonged to Paureni, a man he had previously reported to police over alleged fraud.

Kanhema reportedly pulled over and approached the vehicle, signaling for the driver to roll down the window to confirm his identity.

Instead, the court heard, the vehicle suddenly surged forward.

Paureni allegedly struck Kanhema, sending him onto the bonnet, before continuing to drive with the injured man clinging to the moving car. Kanhema later fell off and slammed onto the road.

He sustained injuries to the head, hands, knees, and shoulders.

Prosecutors allege that Paureni did not stop to assist, instead fleeing the scene as the injured man lay on the road.

The matter was later reported to police, leading to Paureni’s arrest. The case is continuing before the courts.
