Miss Universe Entry Boosts Zim’s Soft Diplomacy Efforts

Zimbabwe’s participation in the Miss Universe 2025 competition has taken on a diplomatic dimension, with experts saying the global pageant offers the country a unique platform to rebuild and enhance its international image.

National representative Lyshanda Moyas is set to showcase Zimbabwe on the world stage when the competition unfolds in Thailand.

The country’s return to the prestigious pageant forms part of a broader strategy to reposition Zimbabwe through cultural platforms that reach worldwide audiences beyond traditional government channels.

Africa University’s Head of International Relations and Diplomacy, Dr. Alexander Rusero, said the move is significant for Zimbabwe’s ongoing re-engagement efforts.

“The participation of Zimbabwe in Miss Universe from an international relations and diplomacy point of view is a welcome development, as it helps to spruce up Zimbabwe’s much-battered image. Zimbabwe has been on a rebound, as testified by Forbes magazine, which characterised the country as the number one destination for 2025,” he said.

Rusero noted that cultural events are increasingly being used as instruments of soft diplomacy, helping countries enhance visibility, boost tourism, and attract investment.

Bindura University lecturer in International Relations, Politics and Diplomacy, Dr. Darlington Ngoni Mahuku, added that Zimbabwe’s presence in Bangkok aligns with this global shift.

“Through cultural diplomacy, platforms like these foster a country’s visibility on the international stage by increasing mutual cooperation, understanding, and respect between nation-states,” he said.

“This is done not only by politicians and ambassadors but also by pageant participants who help build and cement relations through cultural exchange and dialogue.”

Analysts say Moyas’ participation provides Zimbabwe with an opportunity to challenge longstanding stereotypes and present itself as a resilient, creative, and forward-looking nation ready to reconnect with the global community.

With less than five days before the coronation, Zimbabwe’s flag is drawing renewed attention in Bangkok and across global pageant circles.

On Monday, Moyas participated in the national costume fitting—a key stage signalling the pageant’s final stretch.

Observers note that Zimbabwe’s presence at Miss Universe offers a fresh avenue for soft diplomacy, subtly shaping global perceptions through a platform not typically associated with traditional statecraft.
