Zim Netball Shines as Gems Claim Bronze, Golden Flyers Secure Silver

 

Zimbabwe’s senior netball teams delivered a strong showing at the Africa Netball Cup, with the Gems clinching bronze in the women’s competition while the Golden Flyers secured silver in the men’s tournament.

The Gems made history after defeating hosts Malawi by four goals to claim the bronze medal, handing the hosts a rare home defeat.

Celebrating the result, Oliver Mhuriro said the victory marked a major shift in the rivalry between the two sides. 

“For so many years, Zimbabwe has been a well-known walkover for Malawi,” said Mhuriro.

The tightly contested match saw the Gems maintain composure in the closing stages to edge past Malawi and secure third place, a result that was warmly received by netball followers back home.

The Zimbabwe Netball Association also praised the team’s performance and individual brilliance. “Well done to our Gems for securing third place after a very tight game against Malawi, and congratulations to Thandazile Ndhlovu for yet another Player of the Match award,” the association said.

Meanwhile, Zimbabwe’s men’s team also impressed at the tournament, finishing second in their competition. The Zimbabwe Netball Association congratulated the Golden Flyers on their achievement.

 “Silver with pride. Congratulations to our Golden Flyers, the Zimbabwe Men’s Netball Team, on a well-earned silver medal at the Africa Netball Cup 2025,” the association said.

The results capped a successful tournament for Zimbabwe, underlining the country’s growing competitiveness in both women’s and men’s netball on the African stage.
