The Universal Peace Federation (UPF) held the International Leadership Conference in Maputo, Mozambique, between January 7-8 which ran under the theme “Innovative Solutions for Peace in Africa: The Central Role of Parliamentarians and Spiritual Leaders.”
The programme featured sessions aimed at exploring solutions to critical global problems such as poverty, conflict, climate change and family breakdown.
The ILC also featured the launch of the International Association of Parliamentarians for Peace (IAPP) which the Member of Parliament for Norton, Temba Mliswa, who was part of the delegation said is a very critical caucus to have.
Mliswa said the IAPP is a great peace driving initiative which Zimbabwe and the whole of Africa need to embrace as it aims to empower the continent to be a peace negotiator.
“There is need for an association of parliamentarians which advocates for peace. Peace is an ongoing process, its important and it has to be there.
“The association is important in Zimbabwe as well and parliamentarians need to take the lead in the initiative as they play a central role in nations throughout the world, representing the people.
“The main vision behind the launch of the International Association of Parliamentarians for Peace is to provide a platform for parliamentarians from different countries to use their experience to help find concrete solutions to world problems,” Mliswa said.
