Zimbabwe Korfball Federation will hold an open season tournament at Queen Elizabeth School on 21 January, 2023 for old and upcoming korfball clubs.

Speaking to Zimbabwe Now, Zimbabwe Korfball Federation secretary-general, Ottilia Kurebwaseka said everyone is invited to register for the games.

She said registration for the tournament is free as they want to attract new clubs to register.

“Universities, colleges, corporates, communities, towns, growth points. No team is small. Any athlete can register to play for a small fee and also get free Zimbabwe Korfball player ID.

“All tall ladies please come; school teams are also welcome. Families or individual players can come and find teams,” she said.

Kurebwaseka said the tournament will also be used as a selection platform for the national team.

For the world championships, the team will have 14 players and five officials.

The Zimbabwe national korfball team, which qualified for this year’s World Cup in Lusaka Zambia, has been appealing for corporate support for their preparations for the world championships to be held in Chinese Taipei in October 2023.

Zimbabwe won the final IKF-All Africa Championships by 14-12 against defending champions South Africa to book their place in the World Cup championships.

In 2019, the team failed to participate due to financial constraints.

The sport is still largely unknown in the country.

Korfball is a ball sport, with similarities to netball and basketball. It is played by two teams of eight players. The objective is to throw a ball through a bottomless basket that is mounted on a 3,5m high pole.
