Zimbabwe Targets Botswana Market for Exports

Zimbabwean companies are increasingly setting their sights on Botswana as a key export destination, amid growing indications that trade between the two countries remains largely underexploited despite strong potential.

ZimTrade chief executive officer Allan Majuru said Zimbabwe’s production capacity positions local firms to supply a wide range of goods into Botswana, where demand for quality products continues to grow.

“Zimbabwe’s diverse manufacturing base, agricultural capacity and value-added products present significant export opportunities into Botswana,” Majuru said.

He said the structure of the two economies creates a natural fit for stronger trade ties, with Botswana offering a ready market for Zimbabwean goods and services.

“Botswana’s demand for quality goods and services creates a ready market for Zimbabwean enterprises,” he said.

Majuru identified processed foods, building and construction materials, horticulture, leather, as well as manufactured products and services among the sectors with the highest potential to drive exports.

“He highlighted key sectors with high potential for increased trade, including processed foods, building and construction materials, horticulture, leather, and manufactured products and services.”

However, he said realising these opportunities will depend on how effectively businesses position themselves and connect with the market.

He stressed the importance of improving market intelligence, strengthening business linkages and enhancing private-sector engagement to unlock these opportunities and translate them into tangible trade flows.

The renewed focus on Botswana comes as Zimbabwean firms seek to expand regional footprints and diversify export markets, amid increasing competition and shifting dynamics in international trade.

Analysts said  tapping into neighbouring markets such as Botswana could provide a quicker pathway for growth, given proximity advantages and existing regional trade frameworks.
