Aspindale Couple in US$15k Mining Scam

A Harare woman has appeared in court for allegedly helping her husband defraud a Nyanga miner of US$15,000 in a fake mining claim deal and later obstructing detectives trying to arrest him.

Kate Maumbwa appeared before magistrate Ruth Moyo, with prosecutor Takudzwa Jambawu leading the State. The complainant is miner Everisto Kamone.

The court heard that Kamone was seeking assistance to reinstate a revoked mining claim in Nyanga when he was introduced to Simon Musika, Maumbwa’s husband, who allegedly claimed to be a Ministry of Mines employee based in Mutare.

Musika reportedly invited Kamone to his residence in Aspindale, Harare, where he met both Musika and Maumbwa. During the meeting, Musika allegedly promised he could facilitate the reinstatement, a claim Maumbwa is said to have supported despite allegedly knowing her husband worked for the Zimbabwe National Army, not the Ministry of Mines.

Musika allegedly demanded US$20,000 to process the claim. Kamone agreed and later paid a US$15,000 deposit in cash at the couple’s residence, handing the money to Maumbwa in Musika’s presence.

The pair allegedly assured him the process would be completed within three days, but no documents were delivered. Kamone later discovered Musika was not employed by the ministry and reported the matter to police.

Investigations allegedly showed the couple acted in connivance to misrepresent Musika’s identity and defraud the complainant. The money has not been recovered.

In a separate charge, Maumbwa is also accused of defeating the course of justice. The State alleges that on April 25, 2026, detectives from the CID Commercial Crimes Division raided their Aspindale home in connection with a fraud case involving Musika.

Upon arrival, officers reportedly identified themselves and asked for Musika. It is alleged Maumbwa locked the house and blocked entry after noticing detectives had seen her husband inside, then helped him escape through another exit before reopening the door.

The matter is still before the courts.
