
The Zimbabwe Youth Action Platform has called for businessman to be treated fairly amid ongoing public criticism surrounding a lavish wedding involving his family, arguing that public debate should remain balanced and factual rather than being driven by hatred or political attacks.
In a statement released by the organisation’s chairman, , the youth group said the backlash against Tagwirei following the high-profile wedding celebrations had unfairly targeted a businessman who has invested heavily in Zimbabwe’s economy and social development programmes.
“The issue should never be about attacking wealth itself, but rather about ensuring that all business activity in Zimbabwe is conducted lawfully, transparently and in ways that contribute to national development,” Chidawa said.
The statement follows widespread debate over the wedding of and , which reportedly featured gifts valued at more than US$20 million and attracted significant attention on social media.
Critics argued that the scale of extravagance reflected deep inequality in Zimbabwe at a time when many citizens continue to face economic hardship, low incomes and struggling public services.

However, the Zimbabwe Youth Action Platform said it was unfair to automatically criminalise successful indigenous businesspeople without evidence.
Chidawa said Tagwirei had continued investing in Zimbabwe during periods when many businesses scaled down operations or externalised capital, adding that his investments through and associated ventures had contributed to sectors such as agriculture, energy, mining, infrastructure and community development.
The organisation also highlighted philanthropic work linked to Tagwirei through the , including support for schools, hospitals, churches, irrigation projects, boreholes, solar initiatives and youth empowerment programmes.
“It is unfortunate that success achieved by indigenous Zimbabwean businesspeople is often automatically criminalised or politicised without evidence,” Chidawa said.
The group further argued that the wedding should not be turned into a political issue, saying family celebrations involving gifts and goodwill are common across the world.
Tagwirei has in recent years publicly promoted youth participation in entrepreneurship, innovation and modernised agriculture, while encouraging local investment and home-grown economic solutions.
The Zimbabwe Youth Action Platform urged Zimbabweans to focus national discussions on economic growth, job creation and unity rather than division and selective condemnation.
