The theft of US$16 000 worth of diamond pieces has landed two Chiadzwa men in trouble.

Munyaradzi Clive Makombe, 29, and Farai Murombe, 38, appeared before Mutare provincial magistrate Richard Ramaboa, charged with theft.

Prosecuting, Nyasha Gerald Mukonyora said on September 5, 2022, at Anjin Investments (Private) Limited in Chiadzwa, Makombe and Murombe unlawfully took diamonds from the company.

“Makombe’s duties, among others, were to monitor the conveyor belt to a provided tray and waste buckets. Murombe’s duties were to provide security in the picking room and to detect any thefts and misconduct among the diamond pickers.

“On September 5, 2022, Makombe took advantage of the absence of their supervisor in the picking room to steal the diamonds.

“Makombe went to the glove box and removed the diamond pieces from the picking tray and placed them on the conveyer belt. He made the diamonds spill into an empty waste bin. He took the diamond pieces and placed them in his mouth, said Mukonyora.

Cephas Maziraho, who was monitoring the CCTV discovered the offence and told Makombe’s supervisor. Makombe was ordered to stop working until the arrival of a security officer.

Makombe spat the diamond pieces and gave them to Murombe who was on his way out of the picking room.

When the security supervisor arrived and searched Makombe, he did not find anything as Murombe had left the stolen diamonds outside.

The estimated value of the stolen diamonds, according to Mukonyora, is US$16 000 and nothing was recovered.

The video footage of the incident will be produced as an exhibit.
