Former Premier Soccer League star and renowned grassroots football mentor Ralph Kawondera was honoured with the prestigious Outstanding Soccer Legend and Grassroots Development Award at the 2026 Dungwiza Community Trailblazers Awards held at Margolis Plaza in Chitungwiza on Friday.

The accolade recognised Kawondera's immense contribution to Zimbabwean football over several decades, both as a distinguished player and as a tireless developer of young talent through grassroots initiatives.

A household name during his playing days, Kawondera enjoyed a career that spanned some of Zimbabwe's most prominent football clubs, including Black Wolves, KTS, Dynamos, Darryn T, Hwange, Flame Lily, Rufaro Rovers, Fire Batteries, Border Strikers and Monomotapa. His versatility, leadership qualities and commitment to the game earned him respect across the football fraternity.

While many former players fade into the background after retirement, Kawondera chose a different path. He dedicated himself to nurturing the next generation of footballers, becoming one of the founding pillars of the Chitungwiza Junior Football Development League (CJFDL), an organisation that has become a breeding ground for young talent in the country's most populous dormitory town.

In a congratulatory message, the CJFDL, together with its partners LM Auctioneers, Utano and Crowd Roc Events, hailed the veteran football administrator and coach for his enduring impact on youth football.

The statement further noted that Kawondera's journey from the elite football ranks to community development exemplifies the values the award seeks to celebrate.

The honour comes as recognition not only of his exploits on the pitch but also of his continued efforts to ensure that young players from disadvantaged communities are given opportunities to pursue their dreams through sport.

According to organisers, the Dungwiza Community Trailblazers Awards were established to celebrate individuals, institutions and organisations that have made exceptional contributions to community development, leadership, education, healthcare, business, sports and the arts.

This year's ceremony attracted a diverse range of recipients from across Zimbabwe, reflecting the broad spectrum of sectors driving social and economic transformation.

Among the notable winners was Engineer Tafadzwa Muguti, who received the Excellent Homegrown Visionary and Transformative Leadership Accolade for his role in championing development initiatives and public service.

Mutoko Rural District Council was recognised with the Excellence in Teamwork and Strategic Civic Leadership Award, while Chitungwiza Municipality received the Progressive Urban Governance of the Year Award in recognition of efforts to improve service delivery and urban management.

Marondera Municipality walked away with the Most Improved Urban Council Award, while Dr Farirai Guta was honoured as Outstanding Service Delivery Administrator. The Outstanding Councillor Award went to George Chatanga.

In the Community Development and Social Impact category, Honourable Isaac Tasikani received the Outstanding Community Development and Legislative Leadership Award, while community figure Madzibaba Simba was recognised as a Community Trailblazer in Health and Education.

Compassionate Care Trust earned the award for Outstanding Contribution to Disability Support, while the BAWLS Foundation was honoured as the Outstanding Women's Empowerment Group.

The Heart of Gold Award went to Daisy Mukariri, while Littlehood Junior School was recognised as the Outstanding Primary Education Provider.

The Infrastructure, Utilities and Energy category saw David Zimindo crowned Infrastructure Development Trailblazer of the Year, while Manyame Rural District Council received the award for Outstanding Rural Infrastructure Development.

ZETDC Chitungwiza District was honoured for Public Utility Innovation and Service Excellence, and Nexas Gas and Equipment was recognised as Outstanding Energy Provider and Community Innovator. Urban Driving School claimed the award for Outstanding Transport and Road Safety Education Provider.

In the Innovation, Education and Healthcare category, the Marondera University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology won the Excellence in Innovation and Sustainable Regional Development Award. Waddilove High School, one of Zimbabwe's most historic educational institutions, received the Lifetime Achievement Award in Education.

Makoni 24-Hour Medical Centre was recognised for Excellence in Community Healthcare Innovation and Specialised Medical Care, while the Zimbabwe Agricultural Development Trust (ZADT) received the accolade for Outstanding Agribusiness Consultancy for Climate-Smart Financing.

The Media, Arts, Sports and Business category featured some of the evening's most celebrated recipients.

Veteran journalist Jairos Saunyama was honoured with the Excellence in Community Journalism and Media Leadership Award, acknowledging his extensive contribution to community-focused reporting.

Music veteran Hillary "Master H" Marufu received the Music Icon and Genre Outstanding Trailblazer Award, while popular sungura musician Mark Ngwazi was recognised as the Outstanding Sungura Musician.

Businesswoman Chipo Chipiwa Chibamu was named Outstanding Entrepreneur and Community Builder for her efforts in empowering communities through enterprise development.

Yet among a distinguished list of achievers, Kawondera's recognition resonated strongly within football circles. Many viewed the award as long overdue recognition for a man whose influence extends far beyond his achievements as a player.

From his days marshalling teams in the country's top-flight league to mentoring youngsters on dusty community grounds, Kawondera has remained committed to the growth of football at every level.

His contribution has helped create pathways for hundreds of aspiring footballers in Chitungwiza and beyond, many of whom have progressed to higher levels of competition after receiving their foundational training through grassroots programmes.
