A haulage truck driver has been sentenced to two years in prison after being convicted of driving under the influence of alcohol on the Harare-Mutare Highway.
Patrick Tumbo, 40, was convicted by the Rusape Magistrates' Court after a breathalyser test showed his blood alcohol concentration was 212mg per 100ml, more than two-and-a-half times the legal limit of 80mg.
The court heard that on June 16, 2026, Tumbo was driving a haulage truck along the Harare-Mutare Road when police observed him overtaking in a prohibited area near the 175km peg.

Officers stopped the vehicle and issued a traffic ticket before noticing signs that suggested the driver may have been intoxicated.
A breathalyser test later confirmed that Tumbo's alcohol level was well above the legal limit.
The court found that he had been driving while under the influence of alcohol to the extent that he was incapable of exercising proper control of the vehicle.
He was subsequently convicted under Section 55 of the Road Traffic Act and sentenced to an effective two-year prison term.
