
Zimbabwean-born MTN Group President and Chief Executive Officer Ralph Mupita has been appointed as a founding commissioner of the AI for Good Global Commission, a United Nations initiative aimed at promoting the responsible use of artificial intelligence to drive sustainable development.
The commission, established by the United Nations International Telecommunication Union, seeks to expand digital access and harness AI to improve economic growth while ensuring the technology is developed and deployed responsibly.
Mupita joins more than 40 leaders from governments, global businesses and international organisations selected to serve on the commission.

Commenting on his appointment, Mupita said it was an honour to be part of the founding group tasked with shaping the future of artificial intelligence for global benefit.
He said MTN believes AI has the potential to transform critical sectors such as healthcare, education, food security and industrial productivity, adding that the technology must be developed in a manner that is safe, ethical and inclusive.
The commission brings together prominent figures from the technology sector, including Nvidia chief executive Jensen Huang, Microsoft President Brad Smith and Amazon chief executive Andy Jassy.
According to the ITU, the AI for Good Global Commission builds on the work of the Broadband Commission for Sustainable Development, which has played a key role in advancing digital inclusion and supporting economic development worldwide.
Mupita's appointment places a Zimbabwean executive among the global leaders helping shape policies and strategies for the responsible adoption of artificial intelligence.
