Lack of Exposure Costs Zimbabwe Place at African Table Tennis Championships

Zimbabwe's hopes of qualifying for the 2026 African Table Tennis Championships in Morocco came to an end on home soil after the national team failed to secure one of the available qualification spots at the Southern Regional Table Tennis Championships in Harare, with head coach Liping Wang attributing the setback to a lack of international exposure.

The national side missed out on qualification despite hosting the regional tournament, with Wang saying his players lacked the experience needed to compete against stronger opponents on the continent.

"The players lack exposure, and that affects their confidence, attacking play and overall game plan," said Wang.

Despite the disappointment, Wang praised his players for their commitment and performances during the tournament, saying they showed great potential even under difficult circumstances.

However, he identified inadequate preparation, limited training time and a shortage of facilities as major challenges facing the national team.

According to Wang, some players trained for only 10 days before the tournament, while others had just four days of preparation because the association does not have a permanent training venue.

"The players trained for different periods because we don't have one place to train. The association also lacks facilities and funding, and that made our preparations difficult," he said.

Since taking over as Zimbabwe's national table tennis coach, Wang said his long-term goal is to build a competitive team by introducing Chinese table tennis tactics.

"You can't develop a team in a short period of time, but I want to introduce Chinese table tennis tactical skills so that Zimbabwe can become a highly competitive side," he said.

Meanwhile, the Zimbabwe Table Tennis Association is expected to send five players to an international tournament in India in two weeks' time as part of efforts to expose the team to tougher competition.

Association president Noah Ferenando said the squad is expected to travel once the visa application process has been completed.

"In two weeks' time, the team will be flying to India for another tournament," Ferenando told ZimNow by telephone.

Wang also confirmed the planned trip, saying the team is awaiting the completion of the visa application process.

"We have five players we want to send to India, but we are still in the process of applying for visas," he said.

The Southern Regional Table Tennis Championships, held in Harare from July 10 to 12, brought together 10 Southern African countries and served as the official qualification tournament for the 2026 African Table Tennis Championships in Morocco.

The competition featured men's and women's team, singles and doubles events, with the region's top players battling for places at the continental championships.
