Food and Agriculture Organisation Director-General, QU Dongyu, has said that it is crucial to increase water productivity with innovations in agriculture as it is responsible for 70% of global freshwater withdrawals.

Qu addressed African leaders and experts during the high-level opening of the first FAO regional workshop on National Water Roadmaps at the Harare International Conference Centre, Harare, which is running between February 22-24.

Qu said while there is increasing awareness of water importance, there is still a need for more effective and coordinated actions, attached with valuing and managing water in an integrated manner.

“The National Water Roadmaps strategies will help to strengthen water resources management and are an important tool to address the growing challenges around water, helping to achieve the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

“More crop per drop, it is also necessary to cut greenhouse emissions from agriculture through the sustainable management of soils to prevent further disruption to the water and climate cycle.

“Integrated water-related strategies and policies, with concrete actions and strong political will, are crucial to managing water across sectors in a holistic and efficient way,” he said.

He also advised African countries to look at “the big picture” of integrated water resources management in order to deal with increasing competition and trade-offs between sectors, and increasingly work in partnerships.

Qu emphasized climate crisis is increasing the frequency and intensity of droughts and floods, which has an impact on food production.
