2 Goromonzi lithium mines shut down

The Environmental Management Agency has shut down two lithium mines in Goromonzi district over charges operating without environmental impact assessment certificates.

EMA Mashonaland East provincial spokesperson Astas Mabwe said, “Two companies were issued with tickets and orders to stop illegal lithium mining and processing.”

The two, TN Gold and Shengxiang Mining Investments were fined ZWL$500 000 and ZWL$100 000 respectively.

 Mabwe said the two mines will have to regularise their paperwork before they can resume operations.

“The companies have since stopped operations and are in the process of applying for EIA certification from the agency,” said Mabwe.

Mabwe there is much unregulated activity in the area: “After a public outcry on lithium and illegal mining activities in Goromonzi district, Ema carried out inspections in hotspot areas reported. Through the inspections, it was found out that a lot of individuals and companies had started lithium mining without the requisite licences,” Mabwe said.

Mabwe also said that by artisanal miners who run away when they see law enforcement officers are a problem in the area

“As Ema, we continue to monitor the situation and encourage prospective miners to have the necessary papers before engaging in mining activities," said Mabwe

EMA recently shut down Redwing Gold Mine in Manicaland over safety concerns with some reports saying more than 20 deaths in work related incidents have been recorded at the mine.
