A Glen Norah man who posed as a clearing agent at Chirundu Border Post and defrauded money from a victim promising that he was going to buy a Honda Fit but went on the run only to be found in Zambia has appeared in court.

Tinashe Karuru, 25, of Glen Norah A was at the Harare Magistrates' Court charged with fraud or, alternatively, contravening Section 136 of the Criminal Law Codification and Reform Act, Chapter 9:23.

The State, alleges that on August 28, 2022, in the Central Business District, Karuru lied to the complainant that he was a clearing agent at Chirundu Border Post.

The complainant believed what Karuru told him and engaged him to buy a Honda Fit GP5 Hybrid on her behalf from Japan.

Karuru charged the complainant US$4 950 as the total price from Japan to Chirundu.

In trust, the complainant gave Karuru the money.

He, however, later demanded US$1 350 on top of the money he had already been given by the complainant on different occasions as expenses for the importation of the car.

After paying the whole amount that was required by Karuru, the complainant was informed to expect her car in December 2022 at Chirundu Border Post.

Follow-ups were then made on the position of the car until she was told that it was at Chirundu Border Post.

The complainant went to Chirundu Border Post to collect the car, but when she got there, Karuru's number was no longer reachable.

The complainant made several efforts to get hold of Karuru, but all the efforts were fruitless until she later found him in Zambia.

The total amount the complainant lost was US$7 470 and nothing was recovered.

Karuru appeared before magistrate Evelyn Mashavakure who ordered him to appear in court again on Friday for bail application.
