Athletes win big in Masvingo Comm Gen of Police road race

Forty-nine athletes, the bulk of whom are members of the police force, walked away with prize money of at least ZWL$100 000 from the Old Mutual-sponsored Commissioner-General of Police’s twelfth edition of the 21km road race that was held in Masvingo on Saturday.

The road race began and ended at Caravan Park after taking athletes to the DB Stopover Club and Hillside suburb. 

The race was in three categories, the five km fun run, the 10km road race and the 21 km road race with all the races having an open category. 

Zimbabwe National Army athletic clubs, most notably Black Rhinos, scooped eight medals while individual athletes won seven medals and Nedbank Athletics Club bagged four medals. Pace Athletics Club won two medals. 

Other clubs and institutions such as Vision Academy, Mutare Club, Masvingo Club, Mimosa, Danhiko, Tsvaira and Powerhouse won a medal each. 

Police CG Godwin Matanga officiated the road race and said the road race demonstrates police’s commitment to strengthen relations with all communities, adding that the last two races were held in Bulawayo and Mutare. 

“The 21km road race held for the first time in Masvingo demonstrates the organisation’s commitment to strengthen relations with all communities,” said Comm Gen Matanga. 

The 49 winners got prizes ranging between ZWL$100 000 and ZWL$550 000.

ZNA member Blessing Watson and police officer Fortunate Chidzivo walked away with ZWL$550 000 each in the men and women’s 21km open races with Watson finishing the race in one hour four minutes, and 49 seconds, while Chidzivo completed the same in one hour and 17 minutes and 15 seconds.

Agnes Mukwezaramba was the road race oldest participant and won ZWL$150 000 in the grand mistress (60 years +) 21km race after finishing in 2hr 7m 12s.
