Villagers in the Chipindirwe area of Marange in Mutare West are living in fear following the sighting of stray buffaloes in their vicinity with the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority saying it is taking action to protect people.
ZimParks confirmed receiving a report of the stray buffaloes, which, according to the Parks and Wildlife Act, are considered as dangerous game.
While it could not be immediately be established where the buffaloes, whose number was also not clear, had come from, no casualties or damage to property have been reported so far.
In a statement, ZimParks said they are trekking the animals to take the necessary corrective measures to prevent them from endangering people’s lives.
“ZimParks is informing you that we have just received a stray buffaloes report in Chipindirwe area of Marange. Communities are encouraged to mimimise movements in thickets and tall grasses during these high alert moments.
“The most vulnerable groups include pupils, the elderly and people with disabilities. As usual, we are working with the Mutare District Development Co-ordinator’s office, traditional leadership and Mutare Rural District Council to mobilise resources so that our team can attend to and mitigate this plight. If you find yourself near these dangerous animals, climb up a tree for safety,” said Zimparks.
