Hit-and-run driver apprehended by members of the public after killing motor cycle passenger

A hit-and-run driver was apprehended by members of the public after causing a fatal road traffic accident on Tuesday at the intersection of Seke Road and Craneborne Avenue.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police reported that the accident involved a Nissan UD truck that hit a motorcycle from behind, killing the passenger and injuring the rider.

“The ZRP reiterates that drivers must stop after an accident. Police in Harare are investigating a fatal road traffic accident which occurred on 20/06/23 at the intersection of Seke Road and Craneborne Avenue.

“A Nissan UD truck with no passengers on board hit a motorcycle from behind, resulting in the passenger being killed while the rider sustained head injuries.

“The driver of the UD truck, Masimbaashe Chindondo, 26, did not stop after the accident and was subsequently apprehended by members of the public after a speed chase,” reads the statement.

There have been multiple cases of hit-and-run incidents reported in Zimbabwe.

These incidents involve drivers who flee the scene after colliding with pedestrians, motorcycles or other vehicles.

Some drivers flee the scene due to fear of legal consequences, lack of documentation, or being under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
