A Mufakose maid was arraigned before the court after she gave birth to a baby girl and dumped it in a plastic bag.

Tilda Kamhaka, 19, appeared before magistrate Dennis Mangosi at the Harare Magistrates' Courts facing infanticide charges.

The State, through prosecutor Grace Mugocheke, alleges that on July 2023, around 0730 hours, Kamhaka told her boss’s mother-in-law that she was going to buy bread at a nearby tuckshop.

When she saw her carrying a satchel, she told her to carry a plastic bag instead and not to carry a satchel.

She insisted that she wanted to carry the satchel but the mother in-law persuaded her and she later agreed to leave it.

After Kamhaka had gone out, the mother in-law lifted the satchel bag and felt that there was a heavy object.

She opened it and saw blood stains and she went on to call her neighbour, Priscilla Bopoto.

They waited for Kamhaka to return and Bopoto asked her and she told her what she had done.

The body of the baby was taken to Sally Mugabe mortuary for post mortem.

Kamhuka was granted US$50 bail and was ordered to report at Murehwa Police Station.

She will appear in court on September 19 for her routine remand.
